<<Introduction to Music Therapy>>

This 60 minute talk will guide you to through the basics of music therapy. The talk will be focusing in three areas.

1) theories and concepts of music therapy , such as history and an overview of the schools of music therapy. The speaker will also share info about recent clinical work. 2) music and our brain : An overview on how music affects our emotion, cognitive functioning and social communication . 3) Local development and career path: some basic information about how one should prepare themselves should they consider to become a music therapist in the future. The speaker will also share about her own journey and her views on the development of music therapy in Hong Kong.

Instructor: 張潔瑩 Carol Cheung

Ms. Carol Cheung is a UK Registered Music Therapist , founder of Music For Life Music Therapy Centre. Carol specialises in mental health and wellness, stress, depression and anxiety in particular for both community and medical setting. This includes patients going through cancer rehabilitation and palliative care. Carol believes in evidence-based research and hopes to promote this field by conducting more local studies. She co-led a medical pilot study recently that involves using singing as a tool to relief stress for post-natal mothers. The study shows that postnatal mothers who were engaged in the tailored lullaby singing program were able to lower their anxiety level to a significant level compared to the control group where no music was involved. Apart from clinical setting and research, Carol also participates in community work with children of all abilities, emotional support services for teenagers and working adults.

Mr. James Lee, Lecturer from The Education University of Hong Kong, also an experienced occupational therapist who is specializing in mental health professional services. Years ago, he was trained from Oxford Mindfulness Centre for teaching mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and actively promoting mindfulness in Hong Kong.
