Jeanie Chu

Chu Ka Yi entered the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts as a full time student majoring in cello under Professor Ray Wang in 2000. Chu received her Professional Diploma in 2005 and was rewarded the Jackie Chan Foundation Scholarship from 2002 to 2004.

Chu is very active in performing in orchestral, chamber and solo concerts. She performed in numbers of Broadway Musicals as a solo cellist like the “Annie” and “Oliver Twist” with the New Philharmonia of Hong Kong in 2002 to 2004. Also in a new Broadway Musical “Around the World in 80 Days” with the Faust Company in 2006 and 2008. In May 2010, Chu and two of her best friends formed the Finesse Trio and they performed for the Hong Kong Generation Next Arts for their first Piano Competition’s Winners Concert in Carnegie Hall, Weill Recital Hall, New York in June 2010. The next year in July, they had their first piano trio recital in Hong Kong St. John’s Cathedral. In 2012, Chu has performed as cellist of the Metropolitan String Trio with the MYO (Metropolitan Youth Orchestra) Symphony Orchestra in Musikverein Vienna, Austria.

In the teaching area, Chu is a very experienced teacher for young kids. She was coaching the cello section for MYO RO Orchestra (Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, Repertory Orchestra) with student age around 6 to 10 for 8 years. And then she became the conductor for their Beginners Program for 2 years which for younger group of string players who aged from 4 to 7. Chu also taught in many primary and secondary school as a cello teacher. Such as HoTung Secondary School, St.Paul’s Primary Catholic School, United Christian College (Kowloon East), Ching Chung Hau Po Woon Secondary School, Maryknoll Convent School (Primary Section) and Hennessy Road Government Primary School.
